The I-77 North NC Welcome Center guides visitors to many attractions nearby, including the Yadkin Valley wine country, Blue Ridge Parkway, and many quaint and delightful small towns.
In nearby Mount Airy, which was Andy Griffith’s hometown and the model for “Mayberry” in the TV series, you can visit a museum rich in artifacts from the show and Griffith’s life. The Historic Earle Theatre is home to the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall and the Saturday morning WPAQ Merry-Go-Round, the second longest continuously running live radio broadcast in the nation.
Sparta is home to the Alleghany Jubilee, where flatfooting, clogging, buckdancing, and especially the mountain two-step are the order of the evening on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
The high country of the region is renowned for its Christmas tree farms, and in fact has provided the tree for the Blue Room of the White House for 12 seasons.
In Wilkesboro, just down I-77, you can visit the jail house where Tom “Dooley” Dula was incarcerated before his trial. Visit the Wilkes County Heritage Museum, and also the two famous Ben Long IV frescoes in the nearby St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
